Cordiality

By ARthur

After accepting Conrad's proposal of marriage, Leanna joined her new fiancée on a weekend getaway to a secluded cottage in Minnesota. After unpacking her suitcase, Leanna joined Conrad on the cottage's patio, where he offered her a fruit cordial. But after pouring the drink, Conrad remembered a call he had to make and excused himself.

Leanna slowly sipped the drink while enjoying the scenery and the cool breeze blowing from the nearby hills. Her spirits enlivened when she heard the cottage door open, but instead of Conrad, she saw a little blonde-haired girl.

"Who are you?" Leanna asked. "I'm Jennifer," the girl smiled. "Are you Conrad's daughter?" Leanna asked. "No," said the girl. "Good! I couldn't marry a man with children," Leanna said with relief. "Actually, I'm Conrad's ex-fiancée," Jennifer replied.

"That can't be. You don't look older than 4," Leanna scoffed. "Believe what you want, but after you became Conrad's fiancée, did he ask you to sign a pre-nuptial agreement with a clause giving him all your possessions should you disappear before the wedding?" Jennifer inquired. "Why, yes," Leanna nervously replied. "And since arriving here, did you drink anything that tasted like blackberry liqueur?" the girl whispered in her ear.

Looking at the empty glass on the table before her, Leanna crossed her eyes, and struck a sour look as she suddenly developed acute indigestion. "Oh, goodie," said the girl. "It's been so lonely up here by myself, but now I'm going to have a sister!"
