Medical Center

Nurse Julie Rakin had worked at the Southern State University Medical Center for most of her 30 year career. She had enjoyed a variety of assignments over the years from the emergency room to ICU to pediatrics. Nearing retirement, she had sought out a less strenuous job, landing a position in the genetic research wing of the medical center.

Her first assignment involved straightening out the medical records in the research department. Almost immediately she found things to be in a deplorable state. The records were scrambled. She found files that had mixed-up patient records. Imagine records that started out describing the ailments of people in their seventies and then suddenly referring to ailments of infants and toddlers.

She spoke to the department head, Dr. Oni, but he told her nothing was wrong and to leave things alone. In her mind, Julie thought that they were covering up incompetence. She wouldn't stand for such tomfoolery and she told one of the other nurses of her intent to report these irregularities to the administration.

Before Julie could get off the floor and into the administration wing, she was called into one of the treatment rooms to help with an emergency. Running into the treatment room, she was seized by Dr. Oni and his assistant, Dr. Dreserv. They quickly strapped her to a gurney and inserted an I.V. Suddenly the world went dark.

She woke up feeling quite frightened, but a nurse was nearby and quickly took her hand to comfort her. "You had a nasty accident, young lady. You were quite lucky to only get a small bump on the head," the nurse told her. "Now let's get up and walk a little so I can see if your balance is okay."

Julie stood up and felt an unfamiliar breeze on her legs. She looked down to see that she was dressed in a colorful pediatric patient gown. And though it felt as if she was having difficulty walking, the nurse told her she was doing fine. After all, walking with a thick diaper between your legs can be a little awkward.

That was some bump on the head, Julie thought. She had dreamed that she was all grown up and was a nurse.
