Whenever Jessica was alone she was an intrepid and unstoppable explorer. She crawled into every corner and much of what she found in those corners, made its way into her mouth. Where she sucked and tasted and discovered, the flavors of ordinary life. She wasn't alone much, however, as she was still only two years old and to leave a two year-old alone for long is dangerous and foolhardy and even the dumbest and most incompetent of parents usually know better. Jessica's Mommy did.
Today, because of an interruptive and long-winded phone call, little Jessica was alone and the tot had made her way into a corner she had somehow overlooked in past explorations. In this corner she spied something she had never seen before and so, of course, she had to see what it tasted like. She was on her hands and knees, her diapered bottom sticking straight up in the air as she leaned forward, balancing on three appendages, reaching with one chubby, sticky fingered hand and grabbed the round object. Sitting back on her padded bottom she held the object in her hand and looked at it closely.
It was round and about the size of a large cherry. But, it was not either a ball or a piece of fruit. It was edible though. As baby Jessica found out after she stuffed the sphere into her mouth. Immediately after she did so, the sphere began to glow. It was so bright that it made the entire lower half of her face resemble Rudolph's luminescent nose.
Then it exploded.
A lava flow of flavor escaped the sphere and flooded her interior. It was a nearly transcendent experience for one so young as she was. It was a flavor she had never tasted and almost instantly it was gone and she was about to cry.
At this moment she began to grow. Quickly. Like Jack's beanstalk, she sprouted. Upwards and to a height she had never imagined. Soon, she was as tall as a grown-up and she had a couple of new acquisitions. Which she immediately recognized, as she had long, (life long) been familiar with in relation to her Mommy, but was completely surprised to see on her own body. Jessica nearly tripped over her newly elongated legs as she clumsily ran to interrupt her Mommy. The resemblance to Bambi is unmistakable and very funny. She falls at least twice on her trip.
"Mommy! Mommy! Me got boobies!"
Turning around, Mommy drops the phone and nearly faints.
