The Picnic

The elderly couple made their way down to the picnic grounds. While she appeared to be the frail one, looks can be deceiving. For it was his heart that was failing, not hers. It was difficult to walk over the broken ground with the basket, but worth the effort to visit, for what they believed to be the final time, this oft visited site.

After the struggle, they both needed to sit and rest. He for the failing heart, her for having assisted his larger bulk in making the walk.

They opened the basket, which included a special treat from a small wine shop they had visited for the first time that day. While he caught his breath, she opened and poured the wine they had purchased. It was from Heidegger's Vineyard, a brand they had never heard of, but was purported to be "quite special" by the clerk.

They clinked their glasses together and, before taking a sip, she wished she had 60 more years to take care of him.

They sipped from the glasses, taking care to roll the wine around their mouths and savor its distinctly fruity flavor.

Both were suddenly dizzy. He was afraid this was the last round for his failing heart. But when the dizziness stopped, they were standing on the seashore, hand in hand. And she did have another 60 years to take care of him.
